Willamette University Sparks and University of Oregon Straub Achieve LEED Gold Certification

Two additional Fortis Construction-built projects have achieved Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design certification: Willamette University Sparks Fitness Center has achieved LEED Gold Certification for Commercial Interiors and the University of Oregon Straub Hall Renovation and Expansion has achieved LEED Gold Certification for New Construction.

To date, Fortis has delivered more than 3,000,000 square feet of LEED Gold and LEED Platinum Certified construction. That number almost doubles to nearly 6,000,000 square feet of LEED Gold and Platinum construction when factoring in projects that are in processes and targeting certification and equivalent performance.

The $4 million, 17,000-square-foot Willamette University Sparks Fitness Center Renovation and Expansion was completed as the facility remained in use by students and the community throughout construction. Working in collaboration with the WU Athletic Department and architect Hennebery Eddy to update Sparks, Fortis’ delivered:

  • A fitness center large enough to accommodate varsity athletes and non-athletes together during prime workout times;
  • two multipurpose recreation rooms to support diverse fitness activities and courses;
  • an updated and expanded sports medicine center with training rooms;
  • modern locker rooms and team-room spaces for varsity athletes and campus community members;
  • and more-functional and flexible office, classroom and meeting spaces.

The University of Oregon Straub Hall effort included the addition of 50,700 square feet of new teaching/learning space encompassing a large auditorium and tiered seating classroom with state-of-the-art audio/visual systems. Overall, the project provides for the UO 103,000 square feet of new and renovated space with a total of 1,000 classroom seats.
