To preserve and enhance the University of Oregon’s two founding buildings—originally built in 1876—the Heritage Project consists of extensive renovations to University Hall, Villard Hall, and the surrounding grounds—a designated National Historic Landmark site.

With a LEED Gold target, Fortis’ efforts will preserve the buildings’ historic character and materials while modernizing the interior through: upgraded instructional and administrative spaces including classrooms, offices, and student gathering areas; plus specialized teaching areas such as a film production studio, sound recording studio, screening room, and a variety of theater spaces.

Because the buildings have gone through numerous remodels and additions over the last century, the restoration will focus on comprehensive improvements for safety, security, and accessibility. Laser scanning created measurable records of existing conditions in a three-dimensional point cloud, allowing for enhanced planning and risk mitigation throughout the renovations.
