Can building a bridge build community?

Creating Access to Education, Healthcare and Community in Bolivia

Location

La Paz, Bolivia

Why

Our envisioned future is to build something extraordinary on every continent of the world.

The journey to Bolivia in 2024 was Fortis’ third service project and included a team of 11 employees, along with partners from Engineers in Action. The team constructed the Llavi Mayu bridge about seven hours southeast of the capital city of La Paz. The bridge spans approximately 108 meters and allows safe crossing for pedestrians, motorcycles, wheelbarrows, and livestock.  The project helps provide the community of K’apaj Rancho with safe year-round access to education, health care, markets, employment, and government representation.

Profile Picture

“The project culminated in a walk across the newly completed bridge with the community and a large group of school children. Earlier that week, we saw some of those same children crossing the river below. Now they can cross the bridge to get to school! The positive effect on the community was more than worth the effort. Fortis made a meaningful and long-term impact in the lives of many.”
