Furman Hall is an iconic structure situated at a prominent OSU campus gateway and set within the designated Historic District. After being fenced off and wrapped up for the prior 15 years, Fortis completed the comprehensive renovation of this $12.6 million, 40,000sf campus building, which blends historic appeal with high-tech revitalization. Originally built in 1902, the project required a multi-phase process: Phase 1 included the seismic upgrade, new exterior limestone skin, interior shear walls, new perimeter footings and pin piles, a new roof system, new windows, and technology and M/E/P systems overhauls. Phase 2 included the full interior remodel of all four stories to create an open, flexible and efficient learning environment that provides the ability to adapt and modify spaces over time. Overall, Furman Hall provides a new home for the College of Education with modern classroom, administrative and collaboration spaces. The project was honored with a Restore Oregon DeMuro Award for Excellence in Preservation, Re-Use, and Community Revitalization because it “Transformed a beloved-but-obsolete building in OSU’s historic district that was literally falling apart.”
