The PSU Center for Student Health and Counseling (SHAC) is a community-based health care organization providing health, dental, counseling and testing services for the student population. To create this modern health and counseling space, Fortis completed a multi-floor, multi-phase renovation and expansion of existing office space and parking structure within Downtown Portland’s University Center Building. The first phase of the 12,000sf project entailed renovating the 3rd floor for healthcare staff functions and offices, expanding the space to accommodate larger-and-modernized Dental and Testing areas, and creating a new Health Promotion Program space. The renovation and expansion was completed while the University’s adjacent dental clinic remained fully sterile and operational. Subsequently, the vacated admin spaces were converted into exam rooms and specialized patient spaces. Modern new elements incorporated into the project included architectural-wood walls and ceilings, digital check-in kiosks, dimmable LED lighting, large-scale wayfinding graphics and a “mind spa” space for mental health patients.
