A Stadium Built for the Future: Inside the University of Utah’s Rice‑Eccles Overhaul

In October 2025, Fortis Construction was selected for an $8 million, two‑phase modernization program at the University of Utah’s Rice‑Eccles Stadium — a project that underscores the growing demand for large‑venue reinvestment as universities and municipalities prepare for a new era of mega‑events and year‑round stadium programming.

Phase 1, completed in March, delivered a comprehensive architectural refresh of the West Tower, upgrading spectator zones, event spaces, offices, suites, corridors, and media facilities across levels 4–6. Alongside the visible improvements, Fortis executed a series of stadium‑wide infrastructure replacements — including fire sprinkler systems, hot‑water heating piping, and boilers — addressing aging systems that are increasingly common across collegiate athletic venues built or expanded during the early‑2000s stadium boom.

Phase 2 is now underway and will continue into early summer before pausing for football season. Construction will resume afterward, with full completion targeted for March 2027. Fortis also secured a separate contract to perform deferred maintenance on the stadium’s six rooftop light towers and additional bowl‑level improvements scheduled for this summer.

Working in partnership with Naylor Wentworth Lund Architects, Resolut, and BHB Structural, Fortis has implemented a highly choreographed phasing strategy to maintain uninterrupted stadium operations — a growing priority for owners as venues host an expanding slate of non‑traditional events. The team has navigated around major programming, including the NHL Winter Classic, ensuring that fan experience and revenue‑generating activities remain unaffected.

These projects form part of a long‑range investment plan to elevate Rice‑Eccles Stadium and prepare the venue for global‑scale events, including the 2034 Winter Olympics. For Fortis, the work reflects both a deepening relationship with the University of Utah and the firm’s broader expertise in complex, live‑environment construction across the sports and entertainment sector.
