Apex Clearing provides technical and business solutions for the digital world with a mission to enable frictionless investment access for anyone, and the company has been named one of the 10 most innovative finance companies by Fast Company. With the goal of establishing a new tech hub in Portland to attract engineering talent, Fortis Construction was selected based on a track record of success with CM/GC delivery and prior work within the historic Meier & Frank Building, such as the neighboring third floor $4.2M Finastra office. Reflecting a successful and collaborative project, Apex Clearing’s 10,500sf space was built out in 4.5 months of construction and was completed under budget – a total of $38,500 was returned to the client within the $1.8M GMP. The high-performance, open-office tech space included new MEP systems, walls, glazing, flooring and high-end finishes. Conference rooms and breakout spaces supportive of in-person and virtual meetings are spread throughout the office. To complement the more-formal working spaces, Fortis also delivered collaborative areas including a ping pong room, breakout spaces ranging from phone booths to areas suitable for small teams of 6-8, and a large kitchen with assortment of seating options. Extensive art installations and signature light fixtures round out the high-tech look and feel of the environments. As the building was occupied during construction, Fortis’ detailed preconstruction and logistical planning ensured disruptions were minimized for the adjacent third-floor neighbors and those on floors above and below. This early work was key to avoiding any surprises or costly late-stage changes that can be common with creating a high-tech office within a century-old building.
