The Education Center has been recognized with the American Institute of Architects Committee On The Environment (COTE) Top-Ten Award as one of the most innovative sustainable projects in the nation, was named the region’s Best Public Project, is LEED Platinum Certified, and received Portland AIA’s 2030 COTE award. True team collaboration between the Zoo/Metro, Opsis Architecture and Fortis Construction throughout all phases of preconstruction through closeout was integral to the project’s success. Beyond the exceptionally high bar for sustainability, the project enhances the visitor experience at the Oregon Zoo and reinvigorates a community destination: the new center offers immersive experiences through custom-designed-and-built surroundings that enhance learning and nature experiences; a 150-seat auditorium/event space; conservation education, animal welfare and environmental literacy programs; insect zoo; interactive conservation-care lab; and outdoor plaza with café.

"I loved having the opportunity to build a new, highly sustainable community destination with a very collaborative team. It's not every day that you get to deliver one of the most innovative sustainable projects in the country."
